How to Choose Sewing Thread for Different Fabrics and Garments

Consider fabric and seam construction
Thread selection depends on fabric type, garment use, seam design, stitch formation and the machines used in production. A suitable choice should work with the fabric and process rather than being selected by colour alone.
Review the required appearance and performance of each seam, including stretch, abrasion exposure and the garmentβs care conditions. Confirm the sewing specification with the production team.
Balance appearance and performance
Check thread shade against the approved fabric under consistent lighting. Where a seam is visible, review stitch appearance and coverage on a production-like sample.
Tension, needle, stitch settings and thread all interact. If a seam puckers, breaks or looks inconsistent, assess the complete sewing setup instead of changing thread without a controlled check.
Run a sample and record the setup
Sew a representative sample and inspect seam appearance, handling and performance against the product requirement. Test relevant care conditions where those are part of the specification.
Record the approved thread reference and production settings so teams can repeat the result. Share fabric details, application and expected quantity when discussing supply options.
